Vortrag: Drilling into the lower continental crust (Ivrea-Zone) (auf Englisch!)

Inhalt:

The continental lower crust is arguably the least known part of the lithosphere. With limited available samples compared to the upper crust, yet much larger compositional variability than the mantle, our knowledge of the lower crust has several gaps. The geological Ivrea-Verbano Zone, and the underlying geophysical Ivrea Body, provide a unique natural laboratory to study the lower crust across multiple spatial scales and with numerous approaches. This is the goal of project DIVE (Drilling the Ivrea-Verbano zonE), in the frame of which two scientific boreholes have brought 1.5 km of fresh cores to the surface. Various types of core scans, petrological analyses and borehole logging data reveal…
